I’m glad I held my tongue…

A few weeks ago we were at one of the local grocery stores shopping. There’s this completely adorable little old Asian lady who is a cashier there. She can’t be any taller than 4 foot 8 inches, if that. She is always friendly and smiling. We’re regulars and see her frequently, exchanging pleasantries and trying to use her lane when we can.

I rarely carry cash, but happened to only have a $100 bill to pay for around $20 worth of groceries that night. This wasn’t a problem; she had plenty of change. I noticed our favorite cashier was taking a long time to get the change counted. Too long. I was getting impatient and wanted to say something.

Then I realized what she was doing. She was going through her stack of $20 bills and picking out the “nice” ones. The old and wrinkly ones were being rejected. Only nice, new, crisp bills were selected for my change. I got the four best $20 bills from her drawer as part of my change. This was done despite there being a couple of customers in line behind me. I was a little dumbfounded, but also quite honored by her gift.

I thanked her with a big smile and went on with my day knowing she made the effort to give me something extra and nice. Some people are so cute, you just want to hug them.

I’m glad I held my tongue.
